On the 19th of October the Size of Wales organisation held a ‘Size of Wales Partners’ event and reception for the Forest Project Partners; and Supporting Partners involved in the organisation. Size of Wales is an organisation that aims to bring everyone in Wales together to protect tropical forests. The event was held at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay.

The first part of the evening was a Partners Seminar, starting with a Welcome Address from Heather Stevens, Chair of Waterloo Foundation.

She was then followed by Hannah Scrase, Director of Size of Wales who spoke about what the organisation had already achieved and what was currently being done by the Size of Wales team.

Cath Long then spoke about the community land rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo and how the work done by Size of Wales is benefiting the forests and their people.

Dave Evans, Founder and Manager of XS nrg, then gave a speech describing the business benefits of investing in environmental projects, in terms of communicating core business values, attracting like minded customers and associates, driving revenue growth, and solving global problems in the most cost effective way. He went on to explain that he saw expenditure on environmental projects as an investment not a cost, and as a driver of sustainable business growth not a drain on resources.

Sarah Jenkinson, Size of Wales Communications consultant then spoke about the challenge ahead and future plans for the organisation to increase involvement throughout Wales.

She was followed by Anita Shaw, Deputy CEO Techniquest who spoke about the involvement of schools of Wales and how to increase their involvement.

The second part of the evening was a Size of Wales reception with Welsh and African Music, drinks and canapés. The reception was started with a welcome from Peter Davies, Commissioner for Sustainable Futures and Heather Stevens, Chair of Waterloo Foundation. The First Minister, Carwyn Jones then spoke about Wales’ role in Africa and climate change.The presentations were rounded off by Anne Meikle, from WWF Cymru who spoke about WWF’s East African Coastal forests project and Andy Middleton from TYF, who spoke about involvement with the organisation and the Forest Project. There was then a preview of the new Size Of Wales video and online campaign followed by more music, wine and food.

To get involved with Size of Wales, you can visit the Size of Wales website, http://www.sizeofwales.org.uk/ where you can join a tribe near you, or make a tribe of your own. You can then invite others in your area to join the tribe through facebook and help in raising money for Size of Wales. Once you have joined a tribe you will receive a news letter on any upcoming events and information on how the Forest Projects are doing. You can also get involved with helping Size of Wales as a school or workplace and make a donation via the website and see how your money will help the Forest Projects. You will find all the information on how to get involved on the Size of Wales website above.

Keep Wales Tidy have set up a new, FREE collection and recycling scheme for companies, schools, colleges etc to safely dispose of redundant IT equipment. Essentially our scheme can take all classifications of IT equipment plus any loose material that make up IT. So, you will be able to safely and legally dispose of all IT and telecommunications equipment in one, all-encompassing collection scheme.

Not only is it free to you, but the great news is that KWT will receive a share of any profit made from the recycling, so it’s a great way to raise funds for a local Welsh charity, support local employment whilst also diverting waste from landfill.

I have attached details on the scheme which I would be grateful if you could circulate to the relevant person.

If your company is interested in taking part, please just get in touch to discuss details.

Regards,

As part of it’s commitment to the 1% for the Planet Programme, XS nrg has committed to donating at least 1% of it’s revenue to the protection of the Ntakata Forest Chimpanzee Reserve in Tanzania.

The Ntakata Forest sits within the Mahale Mountains, and has been home to populations of eastern long-haired chimpanzees for centuries. The Tongwe people who live there have never hunted the chimpanzees for their meat because of their respect for the creatures and the forest they inhabit. Sadly, destruction of the habitat is increasingly threatened by deforestation and future mining projects.

The project wants to secure the Ntakata Forest as a Village Land Forest Reserve (VLFR). Establishment of the VLFR on village land will secure protection and use rights for the owning villages and their inhabitants. This legal step is key for the conservation of forests outside government protected areas, and will enable the local communities to conserve these areas and their resources against emerging and external threats, including grazing and burning, the impacts of new roads being built through the area and prospecting/exploration activities by mining companies.

Dave Evans, Managing Director of XS nrg, is urging other conscientious individuals and companies to follow our lead and support this project. For more information please follow this link;
